Bioreactor production of antibodies. Benchtop bioreactors are used to produce antibodies for anti-cancer drugs. Engineers calibrate bioreactors in order to maximize production. The African Journal of Biotechnology (December 2011) published a study designed to achieve a high percentage of antibody production from a bioreactor. The variable of interest was the natural logarithm of the number of viable cells produced in a bioreactor run. Data were collected for a sample of four bioreactor runs every 6 hours for 20 consecutive time periods. These data (simulated from information provided in the article) are listed in the accompanying table. Engineers have specified the following for the bioreactor runs: target mean = 6.3, LSL = 5.9, and USL = 6.5. Run a complete capability analysis on the data. How would you categorize the performance of the process?

- Does a linear, exponential, or logarithmic model best fit the data in Table 2? Find the model.arrow_forwardIs carbon dating? Why does it work? Give an example in which carbon dating would be useful.arrow_forwardIn running a logistic regression, a statistician decided to include decade of life (20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s) as a categorical variable in the systematic component because they didn't believe the relationship between the log-odds and age was linear. Using dummy variables to create the systematic component, how many dummy variables would be needed to represented age?arrow_forward
- Heart rate during laughter. Laughter is often called “the best medicine,” since studies have shown that laughter can reduce muscle tension and increase oxygenation of the blood. In the International Journal of Obesity (Jan. 2007), researchers at Vanderbilt University investigated the physiological changes that accompany laughter. Ninety subjects (18–34 years old) watched film clips designed to evoke laughter. During the laughing period, the researchers measured the heart rate (beats per minute) of each subject, with the following summary results: Mean = 73.5, Standard Deviation = 6. n=90 (we can treat this as a large sample and use z) It is well known that the mean resting heart rate of adults is 71 beats per minute. Based on the research on laughter and heart rate, we would expect subjects to have a higher heart beat rate while laughing.Construct 95% Confidence interval using z value. Under national standards adopted by the city's fire department, rescuers are supposed to arrive within six minutes to almost all medical emergencies. But the newspaper analysis found that in affluent hillside communities of the city, firefighters failed to hit that mark nearly 85% of the time. The following data show the response times, in minutes, for 10 emergency calls in the Griffith Park neighborhood. 11.8 10.3 10.7 10.6 11.5 8.3 10.5 10.9 10.7 11.2 Based on this sample of ten response times, compute the descriptive statistics (in minutes) in parts (a) and (b) and then answer the questions in parts (c) and (d). Suggest a hypothesis for each scenario. After studying about recycling in his new issue of Organic Compost Quarterly, members of Filbert's compost club decided to investigate the effect of various recycled products on plant growth. Filbert's friends finally decided to compare the effect of different aged grass compost on Jalapeno pepper plants. Because decomposition is necessary for release of nutrients, the group hypothesized that older grass compost would produce taller pepper plants.Three flats of pepper plants (25 plants/flat) were grown for 5 days. The plants were then fertilized as follows:Flat A: 450 g of three-month-old compostFlat B: 450 g of six-month-old compostFlat C: 0 g of compostThe plants received the same amount of sunlight and water each day. At the end of 30 days the group recorded the height of the plants (cm) and then threw a party featuring Jalapeno peppers stuffed with cream cheese!DV - IV -Control -…arrow_forward
- the duration of a bike trip between the gym and his house follows an exponential law. This trip takes an average of 12 minutes twice a day. In the same day, these two durations are independent. What is the linear correlation coefficient between the longest and the shortest displacement?arrow_forwardTable 4.8 shows results of an eight-center clinical trial to compare a drug to placebo for curing an infection. When wildebeest are more abundant, they graze the more heavily, so there are fewer fires and more trees grow. Lions feed more successfully when there are more trees, so the lion population increases. Researchers collected data on one part of this cycle, wildebeest abundance (in thou- sands of animals) and the percent of the grass area burned in the same year. The results of a least-squares regression on the data are shown here.27 grass 06 80- 70 60 50- 40- 30- 20- 10- 1500 1000 Wildebeest (1000s) 500 750 1250 Percent burnedarrow_forward
- What is the mathematical representation for the multiple logistic regression model in photo?arrow_forwardResearchers collected data to examine the relationship between pollutants and preterm births in Southern California. During the study air pollution levels were measured by air quality monitoring stations. Specifically, levels of carbon monoxide were recorded in parts per million, nitrogen dioxide and ozone in parts per hundred million, and coarse particulate matter PM10 in µg/m3. Length of gestation data were collected on 143,196 births between the years 1989 and 1993, and air pollution exposure during gestation was calculated for each birth. The analysis suggested that increased ambient PM10 and, to a lesser degree, CO concentrations may be associated with the occurrence of preterm births. a. The paragraph above describes an O A. Observational Study B. Experiment b. The cases in this research are OA. Air pollution exposure during gestation B. Each birth between 1989 and 1993 C. To study this, a researcher examined a species of coral that is found in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. At 12 localities, he determined the average annual calcification rate of coral over a period of several years and the average annual maximum sea surface temperature during the same period. Calcification rate affects the growth of coral, with higher rates corresponding to greater growth. The table contains data for these 12 localities.
