Calculation:
Use technology to find the minimum, maximum, median, lower and upper quartile for the given data. Follow the steps to draw a box and whisker plot for the given data.
Draw a number line that includes the lowest
- number in the data.
- Mark the minimum (330) and the maximum (1137) values, the median (622) and the upper (886.25) and lower quartile (390.25) above the number line.
- Check for any outlier. If an outlier exists. Mark the greatest value that is not an outlier. Use an asterisk to indicate an outlier. Do not connect it to a whisker. The following screen shot display a box and whisker plot.
The median divides the data in the box into two unequal parts. The data between median and upper quartile are more clustered that data between lower quartile and median. The whiskers are of different length, that is data above the upper quartile has different range compared to data below the lower quartile.
