Adhesive forces are higher in alcohol so it binds to the surface of the glass whereas in mercury adhesive forces are weak so it does not bind to the surface of glass.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction: The tendency of water molecules or two different molecules to bind together is known as adhesion. Cohesion is the tendency of two similar molecules binding together due to force of attraction.
Alcohol binds to the surface of the glass because of higher adhesive force or attraction occurring between the glass and alcohol molecules. But in mercury, cohesive forces are stronger than adhesive forces. Since, cohesive force is the strong attraction between two molecules, mercury does not cling to the surface of the glass as they are two different molecules.
Conclusion: Force of attraction between alcohol and surface of glass is adhesive force whereas in mercury, adhesive forces are weaker.
