Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 16SSC

  28.1mol ; 0.815kg

Explanation of Solution

Given data:

Volume of air, V = 0.635m3

Gas constant, R=8.31Pam3/molK

Temperature of air, T =2°C=275K

Molar mass of air, M = 29g/mol

Formula used:

A force (per unit area) that acts on any object is defined by pressure. The ideal gas law is:

  PV = nRT

Or, V=nRTP

Or, n=PVRT

Where, n = the number of moles

R = constant, the universal gas constant

P = Pressure and V = Volume

Molar mass of gas:

  M=mn

Mass of gas, m=nM

Where, m = mass of gas, M = mass of gas, and n  = number of moles of gas;

Calculation:

It is known that 1.00atm=1.013×105Pa .

By using the formula n=PVRT , calculate the number of moles:

  n=PVRT=(1.013×105Pa)(0.635m3)(8.31Pam3/molK)(275)=28.1mol

By using the formula m=nM , calculate the mass of gas:

  m=nM=(28.1mol)(29g/mol)=814.9g=0.815kg

Conclusion:

The number of moles of gas in refrigerator is 28.1mol .

The mass of the air refrigerator is 0.815kg .
