Formula used:

Change in volume, ΔV=βV1ΔT

Here, β is the coefficient of thermal expansion.

Calculation:

Change in temperature

  ΔT=(400 C-100 C)      = 300C

Coefficient of thermal expansion of methanol and the steel is,

  βmethanol=1100×106/0Cβsteel    =35×106/0C

Volume of the steel tank,

  V1=π4d2h

  V1=π4(2.0000)2×5.0000 m3

  V1=15.7 m3

Now substitute all the values in the formula, ΔV

  ΔV=(βmethanolβsteel)V1ΔT m3

  ΔV=(1100×106/0C - 35×106/0C)×15.7 m3×300
