Answer to Problem 7PP

The equilibrium temperature of water is 56.54 °C

Explanation of Solution

Given:

A container has 1.00×102 g of water at a temperature of 16.0°C . A piece of glass has mass 1.5×102 g at a temperature of 70.0°C is placed in the container.

Formula Used:

When a hot object at a temperature TA (in Kelvin) is immersed in cooler water at initial temperature TB (Kelvin) , the temperature of water increases and reaches an equilibrium value. This is due to the exchange of heat energy between the object and water. If the mass of the object and water is mA and mB respectively, with specific heat CA and CB , the equilibrium temperature is given by the expression,

  Tf=mACATA+mBCBTBmACA+mBCB …… (1)

Calculation:

Here, the hot object is glass which has a mass of mA=1.50×102g and has a specific heat of CA=840 J/kg.K . The water in the container has a mass of mB=1.00×102g and specific heat CB=4180 J/kgK .

The temperature of glass in Kelvin can be calculated as,

  TA=70+273=343 K

Similarly, the temperature of water in Kelvin is,

  TA=16+273=289 K

Substituting the given parameters in equation (1), equilibrium temperature is obtained as,

  Tf=1.5×102×840×343+1.0×102×4180×2891.5×102×840+1.0×102×4180=329.5 K

Thus, the equilibrium temperature in degree Celsius is,

  Tf=329.5273=56.54 °C

Conclusion:

Thus, the equilibrium temperature of water is 56.54 °C .
