The metabolic significance of the statement "only gluconeogenic tissues contain appreciable levels of glucose -6-phosphatase" should be explained.
Concept introduction:
The enzyme glucose -6- phosphate is present in only those tissues which carry out gluconeogenesis.
It is a pathway that generates glucose from non-carbohydrate carbon substrates such as lactate and glycerol.
