Chapter 12, Problem 12aCP
Summary Introduction

To review:

The location of primary and secondary sensory endings along with their response to muscle stretch.

Introduction:

The stretching of muscles due to the movement of a joint is an involuntary action. The involuntary actions in the body are carried out by the spinal cord. The spinal cord is one of the parts of the central nervous system (CNS). The nerve cells involved in generating and transmitting the nerve impulse to initiate a muscle movement are associated with the spinal cord.

Describe the general anatomical design of a muscle spindle and discuss its physiological function.
Describe a muscle spindle and its function considering the following items. Use all terms in paragraph form to describe: - Extrafusal fibers - Intrafusal fibers - Alpha motor neurons - Gamma motor neurons - Capsule - Contraction - Afferent nerve fiber - Somatic reflex (as in the patellar reflex)
Draw a muscle spindle within a muscle, labeling the spindle, intrafusal and extra-futsal muscle fibers, stretch receptors?
