Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The isomeric relationship between butane and cyclobutane has to be identified.
Concept Introduction:
Structural isomers: Structural isomers of the compounds have same molecular formula but difference in the spatial arrangement of atoms.
Stereoisomers: Stereoisomers have the same connectivity but difference in the spatial arrangement of atoms.
Geometrical isomers: In geometrical isomers, atoms have different arrangements on either side of a double bond above or below the ring of a cycloalkane or cycloalkane. If the atoms are present on the same side of the double bond, then it is cis-isomer and if they are present on the opposite side of the double bond, then it is trans-isomer.
(b)
Interpretation:
The isomeric relationship between pentene and cyclopentane has to be identified.
Concept Introduction:
Refer to part (a).
(c)
Interpretation:
The isomeric relationship between 2-pentene has to be identified.
Concept Introduction:
Refer to part (a).
(d)
Interpretation:
The isomeric relationship between propene has to be identified.
Concept Introduction:
Refer to part (a).
