Concept explainers
To explain: The reason why the can collapses after sometime.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
The physical force that is exerted perpendicular to the surface of an object per unit are is defined as pressure. Mathematically given as:
Pressure can be defined as force exerted on a surface per unit area. Air pressure or atmospheric pressure can be defined as the pressure against the surface by the air above it.
When the lid is put on the can, the boiled water inside the can creates the gaseous state of the water which is steam. This gaseous state consists of high temperature as compared to the air present outside the can. So, the pressure drops inside the can which results in difference between the inside and outside pressure of the can. Hence, this pressure difference is the reason due to which the can collapses.
Conclusion:
Hence, due to the pressure difference in the inside and outside of the can, the can collapses.
