Concept explainers
The method by which siphon transfers liquid from one container to a lower one.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
According to Bernoulli’s theorem, with increase in speed of liquid, pressure acting on it decreases.
In siphon, when there is elevation difference between the two containers, then the container at high elevation feels low atmospheric pressure and so in tube the flow of liquid starts and is sucked over the hump. By Bernoulli’s principle, with increase in the flow, pressure at hump decreases and due to pressure difference, liquid starts flowing upper container to lower container. The pressure difference created exerts a force on the liquid.
Conclusion:
Due to flow of liquid, pressure difference is created between upper and lower container and liquid flows from higher to lower container.
