Free radical reactions are an integral part of most oxidation processes thatdirectly involve elemental oxygen. This is why the formation of reactive oxygen species is a major risk, and the involvement of antioxidants plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of an organism. Even the combustion of methane can be used to illustrate how free radicals drive the reaction.
