Chapter 10, Problem 61TQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

The inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation by rotenone that can take place when the substrate is pyruvate but not when succinate is used.

Introduction:

The oxidative phosphorylation is the mechanism by which the conservation of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) generated by the electron transport chain (ETC) takes place due to the phosphorylation of adenosine diphosphate (ADP). There are many inhibitors of the ETC like antimycin A, rotenone, amyta, lnd azide. They can be used to determine the correct order of the ETC.

Please draw out the molecular structures of each molecule and show how each enzyme + cofactor would affect the following molecule in the human metabolic pathway.
Please draw out the mechanism with curved arrows showing electron flow. Pyruvate is accepted into the TCA cycle by a “feeder” reaction using the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, resulting in acetyl-CoA and CO2. Provide the mechanism for this reaction utilizing the TPP cofactor. Include the roles of all cofactors.
