Estrogen receptors(ES) are the protein molecules present inside the cell. Their activation takes place by the estrogen hormone. The estrogen receptors are of two classes- nuclear estrogen receptors and membrane estrogen receptors.
ER alpha and ER beta are the nuclear estrogen receptors, both of them belong to the nuclear receptor family of intracellular receptors. Different genes encode both these receptors. The estrogen receptors have an important role to play in the sexual maturation and gestation.
