As many as 80% of the human cancers are caused by the carcinogenic substances. It damages the DNA  or interfere with its replication or repair. Consequently many mutagens are carcinogens. The standard animal test for carcinogenesis , exposing the rats or the mice to the high levels of the suspected carcinogen and the checking for the cancer are expensive. Thus relatively few substances have been tested in this manner .
