Explain the importance of understanding the child poverty rate. Social workers and policymakers need to understand the child poverty rate because it provides insight into the situation and possible futures of an important percentage of the population. We can find and solve the underlying causes of poverty, create efficient social policies, and promote the systemic changes that are required by researching child poverty rates. “Child poverty occurs when a child lives in a household where the combined annual earnings of all adults fall below a federally set income threshold” ( The Annie E. Casey Foundation, n.d. ). This is why different government programs are needed to help families that are below the poverty line. Identify the child poverty rate in your state. According to Mississippi Children’s Defense Fund (2021), 28% (192, 413) of children are living in poverty in the state of Mississippi. Describe an important characteristic of your state’s poverty rates. In the state of Mississippi, there are 43% of Black children, 43% of Hispanic children, and 14% of Caucasian children who are living in poverty (Children’s Defense Fund, 2021). Over 10% of these children’s families were severally under the poverty line. I Explain one contributing factor to child poverty in your state. One contributing factor to child poverty in the state of Mississippi is the high level of unemployment or underemployment among adults. Limited job opportunities can impact families' ability to earn a sufficient income, making it challenging to meet the needs of their children. The level of job openings is significantly influenced by the state's economy and job market, which has an impact on poverty rates. Understanding the connection between employment and child poverty can help explain the difficult financial situations that Mississippi families face and direct efforts to increase employment possibilities and promote economic stability.
