Report
Post a response to the following: Describe the historical context of the policy in a few sentences. To protect people with disabilities from discrimination, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was amended to reflect Section 504. This policy states that people with disabilities are entitled to the same rights, benefits, and opportunities as people without disabilities. Under Section 504, people with disabilities are given equal access to services like education and employment. “Section 504 specifically addresses civil rights of a disabled person and bans disability discrimination” (Caffrey, 2021) Describe the population the policy serves. The disabled population is served through the Rehabilitation Act. The purpose of Section 504 of this policy is to provide disabled employees with the same opportunities as non-disabled employees. The population served includes people who have visual disabilities such, as blind or in a wheelchair, as well as invisible disabilities. Explain how the visibility of a disability (i.e., one that is easy to see vs. one that is not physically evident) may affect society’s perception of the need for and the acceptance of policies to help those with disabilities. People with visual disabilities may be more likely to receive adjustments from society. This is because it is more likely that they will be recognized and, as a result, more likely that they will be considered when organizing activities, building structures, and many other things. The degree to which a disability is visual may have a significant impact on how society perceives the need for and acceptance of support for people with disabilities. “The social work profession, guided by its ethical imperative to pursue social and economic justice, and informed by its strengths, empowerment, and ecological systems perspectives, is uniquely situated to support the rights of people with disabilities” (Matich-Maroney et al., 2018).
