Report
Post a response to the following: Describe the goals of the Affordable Care Act. There are three primary goals of the Affordable Care Act. The goals are: “Make affordable health insurance available to more people, expand the Medicaid program to cover all adults with income below 138% of the FPL, and support innovative medical care delivery methods designed to lower the costs of health care generally”(U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.). Is access to healthcare a right or a privilege? I believe that healthcare is a mixture of human rights and privilege. “The system has functioned as a fee-for-service system, which means some people are able to afford access to health care and while others are not” (Mandel, 2021). Since, there are individuals that can not afford healthcare, which makes it feel more like a privilege. How does the historical context of healthcare policy intersect with social justice and the mission of social work? Social justice and the mission of social work are intertwined with the historical basis for the policy. Millions of people now have access to insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act. The huge rise in people with new insurance coverage was expected to limit access to healthcare for those with existing coverage, however this did not occur. The general public must be convinced of them if they are to become common public practice (Barabas, 2020). Social workers can offer evidence based on their practical experience, which can result in evidence that is extremely strong. Explain how the clarity, or lack of clarity, around a policy affects the usefulness of that policy for the intended population. Ineffective or difficult-to-understand policies may hurt the populations they are intended to help. Poor design, unclear goals, incorrect use of evidence, and inappropriate evaluation methods are all elements of policies that have unexpected impact for the population they are intended to serve.
