Response 1: The terms "mosaic" and "melting pot" refer to how Canada and the United States approach cultural variety and integration. Canada as a "mosaic" suggests that it values cultural diversity and encourages different cultural and ethnic groups to maintain their distinct identities while contributing to the larger Canadian society. A diversified cultural landscape will be a result of the collaboration of different civilizations. The concept of the United States as a "melting pot" or "salad" reflects a separate point of view in which many cultural components are meant to combine and integrate into a single, united American culture. The "melting pot" metaphor indicates cultural fusion, but the "salad" metaphor contends that each cultural component maintains its individual identity within the larger mix. It is a question of perspective and ideas whether one approach is preferable than the other. The "Mosaic" approach is helpful to maintain cultural history and diversity while promoting inclusion and cultural richness according to some people. In contrast, proponents of the "melting pot" may argue that it leads to a more unified national identity and social cohesion. It is dependent on everyone's perspective on cultural integration and diversity.
