Feb 8, 2024Feb 8 at 11:22pm Manage Discussion Entry Through the textbook reading this week, I have truly deepen my understanding of a different culture than my own. I am personally a Christian Heterosexual female so counseling someone coming from a different sexual orientation background can cause anxiety for me. My intention as a counselor is to never intentionally cause my client harm. I have highlighted three elements that affected my learning this week on the topic of calming my anxiety of counseling other sexual orientations. The first element that I impacted my learning is being self-awareness about my beliefs and lack of knowledge of the LGBTQ+ community (Hays & Erford, 2018). Through this I can be aware of my own strengths and weaknesses to be able to provide growth within myself and as a counselor (Hays & Erford, 2018). Another element from the textbook that would enhance my confidence on counseling an individual with a different sexual identity is Counselor Training (Hays & Erford, 2018). Staying informed on cultural differences, terminology, and ethics can enhance my ability to counsel, ensuring that the client is receiving the most helpful care (Hays & Erford, 2018). My last element of the textbook that deepened my understanding was the topic of Advocacy within the LGBTQ+ community (Hays & Erford, 2018). Coming out with a different sexual orientation sounds incredibly difficult and takes bravery to do (Moradi et al., 2009). Coming from my own personal background, I have never experienced this sort of hardship in my life with friends and family. It can be difficult to come out and share your beliefs and preferences with the world and as a counselor it is our duty to be a advocate for our clients (Moradi et al., 2009). Finding ways to help those within this community to stay safe, cared for, and loved can be a priority for those in the mental health field. As a counselor and a Christian my priority is to always ensure that people are loved and their needs are cared for. “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and
judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs 31:8-9) Through the reading this week I feel more informed to counsel those within the LGBTQ+ community can also have gained confidence in learning more to enhance my knowledge.  References Bible Gateway.
