Pre-proposal AHSC 415 February 6, 2024 Names of teammates: Isidora Fuenzalida Elissia Moullas Shoma Ponnampalam Tamara Al-Kaabi Rend Noureddine Paula Bustamante Borough: https://www.montreal-kits.com/immigration-in-montreal-boroughs.html Saint Laurent: 54% immigrants - Lebanon ranks first among the countries of origin of the immigrant population of Saint-Laurent, followed by China and Morocco and then by Syria and Egypt. Population: Newcomers in Montreal Sources of information: From the 17 given goals (United Nations sustainability goals 2022 . We chose the third category (good health and wellbeing). Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages (mental health & wellbeing) → Anxiety/depression (burnouts, stress) → People at risk: economically disadvantaged individuals → recent immigrants, precarious status
Some sources of information that we identified would help us during this project are: - The United Nations Sustainability Goals 2022 https://unstats.un.org/sdgs/report/2022/SDG_report_2022_infographics.pdf - Montreal Kits website: (helped us determined percentage of immigrants by borough https://www.montreal-kits.com/immigration-in-montreal-boroughs.html - Help for specific communities https://amiquebec.org/communities/ - Precede-Proceed Model for designing, implementing and evaluating health promotion projects https://www.ruralhealthinfo.org/toolkits/health-promotion/2/theories-and-models/precede -proceed#:~:text=The%20PRECEDE%2DPROCEED%20model%20is,and%20focused% 20public%20health%20program . - Stress, anxiety, and depression https://www.quebec.ca/en/health/mental-health/learn-about-mental-health-and-mental-illn esses/promote-good-mental-health/stress-anxiety-depression - Mental health and support resources https://www.quebec.ca/en/health/mental-health/finding-help-and-support-for-mental-healt h/finding-mental-health-help-and-support-resources/mental-health-help-and-support-reso urces Why this subject: The reason we chose to delve into the mental health & wellbeing of immigrants in the city of Montréal is that Montréal hosts a significant percentage of newcomers to Canada. Mental health is a serious issue that has been observed to increase in recent years. We aim to understand its prevalence in the lives of newcomers, recognizing that many individuals migrating to this country are in search of better opportunities and increased access to essential elements and resources like education and healthcare, which may be lacking in their home countries. Solution: Informative workshops and finding ways to fulfill found gaps (to be identified) One of the main solutions that we identified while scoping through this issue is the creation of informative workshops. For this, it is important to identify and understand the gap between the support being granted by organizations and individuals in need, in order to help newcomers. There seems to be a lack of awareness on the part of newcomers of the resources available to them.
Questions: Questions that your team has about the project and that context. 1. What efforts are you making to address mental health within your organization? 2. Why do you think that it is important to address mental health & wellness within a community of newcomers? 3. Do you have any mental health professionals? If not, do you have any partnerships/collaborations with other organizations or private practices to enhance the mental health support of newcomers? 4. Do you consider mental health and wellbeing to be part of the integration of immigrants? 5. What are some of the patterns or common mental health challenges amongst the immigrant population you serve in Montreal that you have identified? 6. What are some barriers/delays that affect the reception of assistance? 7. Do you ensure cultural sensitivity when providing services? If so, how? 8. What are the most predominant social determinants of health that affect newcomers? (Income and Income Distribution, Early Childhood Development, Food Insecurity, Social Safety Net, Health Services, Race, Disability, Unemployment and Job Security, Employment and Working Conditions, Education, Housing, Social Exclusion, Aboriginal Status, & Gender) 9. Assessment process- When it comes to solutions, how can we tell if a client requires professional help or self-help? 10. From what you’ve seen, what are some of the needs of the immigrant populations? Does it vary depending on the country they come from? 11. The common issue of immigrants is housing and being financially stable. How do you help them overcome these challenges despite having language issues or lack of experience for the jobs? What, where, when (visit), why this organization? Because we were unable to find a public organization that offers immigrants/newcomers with specific mental health services, we chose Centre D’Aide Aux Immigrants as our organization of choice for this project. This non-profit offers immigrants different services, including integration services. We are hoping to learn more about their process when it comes to referring newcomers to a private mental health practitioner. Availability to attend borough partner meetings? Friday February 16th at 2:30PM Plan for upcoming weeks / distribution of tasks Our plan for the upcoming weeks will be to visit one of the organizations. If we are unable to match our schedules, we thought about the possibility of dividing our group into two, and visit the place on arranged hours. In the upcoming weeks we will prepare ourselves with the necessary information before visiting the organization to arrive with an understanding and be able to guide our research for this project and its sustainability. From now on, communication with our teammates will be essential, as well as responsibility and ownership of each of our tasks, and, following the deadlines that we will impose for our project to be successfully carried out. The distribution of tasks will be decided by all the teammates in an equal and fair way, depending on our interests and skills.
