Report
1 November 7 th , 2023 510 Diamond Ridge Rd, Seffner, FL 33584 The Honorable Laurel Lee U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 Dear Representative Lee: I am writing to you as a Family Nurse Practitioner student at South University and the mother of two teenagers regarding current-day cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is a serious concern in today's digital age, and it can have significant consequences on the mental and emotional well-being of teenagers. My intent is to urge you to act toward the termination of teenage cyberbullying through means of legal action against the aggressors. As time progresses, this is a problem that seems to only grow larger, so much so that it is the number one concern for school staff members. Cyberbullying is   posting rumors, threats, sexual remarks, a victim's personal information, or hate speech , with victims at a higher risk of suicide in extreme cases. A Pew Research Center survey found that 46% of US teens aged 13-17 have experienced at least one of the five cyberbullying behaviors, with 25% of those students turning to self-harm as a coping method. As a parent, it’s upsetting to see that our children, our future generation, that we have worked so hard to bring up must come face to face, or in this case, face to screen with such negative responses. It feels as if the parents have failed their children. It has been proven a necessary task, to decrease cyberbullying to the best of our abilities and to teach teenagers the importance of supporting one another. A possible method of reducing cyberbullying is through the means of legal action against the aggressor. The process involves adding an aversive stimulus after cyberbullying, dependent on attaining a set amount of community service hours and compensation payment towards the victim to discourage a person from repeating the behavior. I insist that you take the necessary course of action to minimize the enormous amount of cyberbullying. I welcome any additional ideas that you or your staff would like to add, please contact me directly. I look forward to working with you as well as keeping you updated with the progress we make. Sincerely, Jaya Aju Kattakayam, Family Nurse Practitioner student, South University, Tampa, Florida.
