METHODOLOGY 1 Methodology Gabriela Sadler University of the Cumberlands
METHODOLOGY 2 Methodology The following sections will outline the methodology used for this study. The sections include design of the study, which will define which design was chosen and why, research questions, the sampling methodology chosen and why, and how the researcher will choose the sample. Data collection and data analysis methods will be explained. The researcher will discuss assumptions, limitations, and delimitations. Lastly, ethical considerations and issues will be provided. Research Design For this study, the researcher will use an experimental design. According to Leedy and Ormond (2019), experimental research designs pin down cause-and-effect relationships. Many possible factors are considered that might cause or influence a particular behavior, characteristic, or other phenomenon (pg. 192). With an experimental design, there is a control and experimental group so the intervention can be analyzed. This is most appropriate for the study because the researcher will be looking at the effect of co-teaching on a specific group of students. The researcher will use a quasi experimental model to study the effects on the experimental group with a pre and post test. Research Questions This study aims to answer the following research question: 1. Does co-teaching have an effect on the academic performance of students with disabilities? Hypothesis and Null Hypothesis
METHODOLOGY 3 H o : There is a significant difference in academic performance between students with disabilities participating in a co-taught classroom, compared to students in a solo-taught classroom receiving services. H 1 : There is no significant difference between the students with disabilities in the co-taught classroom and the solo-taught classroom when analyzing academic performance. Sampling Method The researcher will use a criterion sampling method where participants have to meet a certain criteria to be chosen. Criterion sampling will be used because the students being studied must be in a co-taught classroom receiving services. The researcher will obtain the sample by completing the following: 1. From June 1st, 2022 to July 1st, 2022 the researcher will contact local school districts to discuss the study with administrators. 2. From June 1st, 2022- July 1st, 2022 the researcher will locate teachers willing to be trained and participate in the study. 3. From June 1st, 2022- July 1st, 2022 the researcher will contact potential students and their parents to discuss the study. The final sample will include 30 students with disabilities: 15 students will be assigned to the experimental group 15 students will be assigned to the control group Of the 30 students, every other student will be assigned to each group. This will create a true randomized sample of the students. Data Collection

METHODOLOGY 4 The researcher will use a pre-test/post-test control group design. The teachers will work together to create a test for the students to take based on content they are learning at midterm and the end of the semester. The tests will be scored on a scale of 0-100. The midterm pre-test will be given on September 21st, 2021, and the final post-test will be given on November 2nd, 2022. Throughout the nine week semester, the co-teacher and general education teacher will implement intervention to the experimental group. The students in the experimental group will receive one hour of co-taught instruction every regular school day. The students in the control group will remain in a solo-taught special education classroom setting. From November 7-11, 2022, the researcher will collect post-data. Both the experimental and control groups will complete the final post-test. Data Analysis The study seeks to answer the following question, is there a significant difference in academic performance between students with disabilities participating in a co-taught classroom, compared to students in a solo-taught classroom receiving services? An Independent t-test will be used to answer the question because there are two samples in the study and the level of measurement of the dependent and independent variable is scaled from 0-100. Assumptions The researcher assumes that the students will receive appropriate services in each classroom. To ensure this, the researcher will actively monitor the classrooms to observe the services being administered. The researcher assumes that the participants will give their best effort on the pre-test and post-test, this will be addressed by offering incentives for the students trying their best. Lastly, the researcher assumes that the pre-test and post-test will be the same for
METHODOLOGY 5 both groups. To guarantee this, the researcher will make sure the teachers work together and administer the same test. Limitations The design of this study may present limitations. The attendance of the students and teachers cannot be controlled, therefore some of the students may miss content that is needed to reflect an accurate score on the test. Next, the participants were specifically chosen for the study, so the data may not be generalizable to all students and classrooms. Lastly, the students may be poor test takers, therefore the scores may not accurately reflect the outcome of the intervention. Delimitations There are many students with disabilities being taught in a co-taught classroom, but this study only includes one school. Next, the study only includes one grade level and one core subject from that specific grade level. Lastly, only one student population is being observed, this population is students with disabilities. The research will not include other scores from the students in the co-taught classroom. Ethical Issues The researcher will address potential ethical issues to the best of their ability. Before conducting the study, the researcher will inform teachers and students how the study will be done and obtain consent from the teachers and parents of the students. Confidentiality of the students and teachers will be protected, the researcher will not use the real names of the participants. Next, the researcher will ensure there will be no harm done to the participants, mentally or physically. If the study becomes too stressful for any participant, assistance will be found and they will not have to continue the study. Lastly, the researcher will report data that is accurate and honest, avoiding scientific misconduct.
