Emma Stalsitz SPU316 01/26/24 Question Responses and Reflection: Bothum (2020) What is Hot in 2020 and Beyond - Shaping the Future of Literacy 1. (Before reading): How would you define “equity”? What are your beliefs about how equity is connected to literacy development? I would define “equity” as being fair and impartial. Equity is connected to literacy development because it ensures that every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances. 2. (After reading): How did Bothum define equity in the context of literacy development? What was similar to your own thinking? What was different? In the context of literacy development, Bothum defined equity as a huge area for teachers and the education program in general. It’s one of the most important things because it lets teachers understand what their students need to succeed in the classroom. 3. Review the 5 most critical topics in literacy identified by teachers in the survey. In your own opinion, order them from most to least important. Justify your ordering. Why did you choose your number 1? Why did your number 5 fall at the bottom? What about the topics you placed in the middle? Why are they there? 1. Determining Effective Instructional Strategies for Struggling Readers: I put this topic first because I think it is the most important aspect of helping students succeed in literacy. A lot of the time, the students are given generic strategies to try, and they're not specific to them at all. I believe that if all students had a truly individualized instruction plan for literacy, we would see major improvement for struggling readers. 2. Building Early Literacy Skills Through a Balanced Approach That Combines Both Foundational and Language Comprehension Instruction: I put this topic second because I think that foundational literacy skills are very important to the success of readers in the long run. I like that the article had this topic as number one and I think that educators as a whole can all work on providing better foundational literacy skills. 3. Increasing Professional Learning and Development Opportunities for Practicing Educators: I put this topic third simply because I think that there is no way to make improvements to our teaching if we don’t study different strategies or have professional development days. The article put this topic at number four, but I think that it deserves to be in the top three. 4. Increasing Equity and Opportunity for All Learners: I put this topic fourth because I don’t think that it is as important as the first three that I put. This is because equity and opportunity for learners will come as the other three topics are addressed and improved. 5. Providing Access to High-Quality, Diverse Books and Content: I put this topic fifth because I think that it is connected to the top three topics I listed. As I said in my explanation for the fourth topic, high-quality and diverse content will come as the other four topics are addressed and improved.
Emma Stalsitz SPU316 01/26/24 4. Return to your quick write. What in this article helped you to think more deeply or differently about the ideas you wrote? This article helped me think more about the importance of equity in the classroom and how much educators are in control of this for their students. In my quick write, I discussed equity as a broader topic and didn’t specifically dive into the awareness that educators need to have. After reading this article, I realized that equity is completing in our hands and we need to take the necessary steps to provide equity for our students.
