When referring to the term “police”, there are often factors that are hidden influencing your opinion on the term. These factors can vary from person to person but they can relate to your understanding of police. Some of these factors include use of force, perception and community policing. Also, delinquent enforcement can be caused by several different factors such as violence at home, lack of guidance, substance abuse or peer pressure. The way that police and the system deal with delinquent acts is common with juveniles. The first factor of understanding the term police is use of force. This can be defined as “the last resort” for a police officer (Mostaghim, 2020). Examples of this factor can include using force for crowd control, while making an arrest, self defense, and even security/body guards providing a safe environment. This factor can influence an individual's understanding of police because it can relate to police legitimacy. Questions like “Is the police officer using force appropriately?” or “Could the officer have done something differently?” can come with use of force. In the interview it was mentioned that “when we think about police power, we think of a massive guy with a gun, baton, tasers, and handcuffs but 99% of the time when we encounter the police those are rarely the tools that police use to deal with us unless it is necessary '' (Mostaghim, 2020). I think this is a great way to insert yourself in a situation where you have encountered the police, and most of the time it is a friendly but stern encounter. The use of force in police is only used when absolutely necessary. The second factor that influences people's opinions on police is community policing. It is almost the most important factor to grow a relationship with the community to earn that legitimacy (Mostaghim, 2020). Some examples of community policing include a police officer participating in a neighbourhood activity to show their support to a cause, collaborations with local agencies such as schools, businesses etc, to provide their support, and foot patrol which happens when police walk around on foot through communities to engage more with the public and show them they are humans just like them. If I were to go to an event in the community and see police presence, I would automatically think the event is important. Moving onto the third factor to help understand the police is perception. Examples of perception can include trust, community relations, police legitimacy, media influence, and discrimination. Having positive perceptions on things tend to lead to a positive-supportive opinion. Therefore, when making opinions on police having these factors will increase your understanding. Like stated above, delinquent enforcement can be summarized by targeting a specific criminal behavior. Relating a delinquent case can be when a teen was charged after assaulting and stealing a vehicle in Guelph. A teenage girl was driving her friend when she denied driving him to a different location, he then punched her, told her to get out of the car then proceeded to take her vehicle and drive there himself. This is an example of delinquent behavior which was classified as a juvenile delinquency. Delinquent enforcement is a way of policing because it can be interpreted as a strategy to help prevent delinquent acts. Using this case as an example, where the teenager stole the car, police can increase patrols in the area to help prevent such a thing from happening again. Concluding, there are several factors that influence our interpretation of the word “police”, and that educating ourselves on these factors can help us understand the system. Delinquent enforcement is definitely a way of policing as it is shown in lots of different cases around the world.
