Running head: SOCIAL INFLUENCE IN CONTEXT Social Influence in Context Social norms are what we consider the laws of our society or culture. This shapes how we respond outside of our group dynamic. According to Aronson’s text, normative influence is where a person conforms to fit in the group because they do not want to feel left out (Aronson & Aronson, 2018. Jamie and Landon were both from different social and economic backgrounds. The movie emphasized the power of love and personal connection in a relationship. The social impact in the film was peer pressure, social expectations, and spirituality. Peer Pressure Landon experienced so much peer pressure in this movie. Everything his best friend Dean and the others told him to do, he would. He was known for being the wrong boy. Landon showed a lot of negative behavior. He and his friends would play pranks on people. One guy who wanted to be down with the crew had to do a dare and caused himself to get hurt, thanks to Landon. He made him jump from a water tower and landed on top of a board in the water which left him unconscious. Luckily, he only broke his arm and hand. When Landon's friends made fun of Jamie, he joined in. Then later on he apologized because he needed her help with the school play. Social Expectations Jamie was viewed as an outcast because of her Christian beliefs. She was also a protagonist. She was never popular. She hung out by herself. Jamie was also a lonely child. Her mother died from the same sickness she had when she was young. Jamie did not care about what
Running head: SOCIAL INFLUENCE IN CONTEXT people said about her. She participated in extracurricular activities. They also considered her a nerd because she was so intelligent and wise. Jamie was one of a kind person. She was not like anyone else. A lot of people could not understand her and thought she was a weirdo. Spirituality Jamie believed in God. She carried her bible everywhere with her. She was also the Reverend’s daughter. When she was diagnosed with leukemia, she told Landon that it was a part of God’s plan, and she accepted it. She said God wants her to live her life the way she wants to. Jamie also said that Landon was a gift from God and he is her angel. Jamie changed Landon so much that he start reading the Bible a lot. She also gifted him her mother’s bible and shared their favorite bible verse with him. Landon said that Jamie’s spirit still brings him peace every time he comes back home to visit. Conclusion The social influence in this film was that love comes in all shapes and forms even when a tragedy strikes. Falling in love with someone who is the complete opposite of you makes you appreciate life a little more. Jamie and Landon loved each other until her death came. Even after she died, Jamie still had an effect on him. He said her love is like the wind, You can feel it but you can’t see it. That stuck with him for many years after she passed away.
