Assignment 1 Guidelines (25%) DUE DATE: WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22 ND BY 11:59PM In this assignment, you will connect your personal experiences (or the personal experiences of a close loved one, such as a child) to the big theories in child development. You will only use one person for this assignment (e.g., do not use both yourself and your child). You will pick four theories from the list found below. Potential Theories to Discuss : Freud’s Psychosexual Stages of Development Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages of Development Piaget’s Stages of Cognitive Development Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory Structure of the Theories: You will use one stage/level per developmental stage from ages 0 to 12 years old. For example, if you use Freud’s first stage (i.e., Oral), you then have completed your 0–2- year-old stage and cannot use Piaget’s Sensorimotor stage; Kohlberg’s Stage 1, Level 1; or Erikson’s Trust vs Mistrust stage because these are all for the same age range. Think of the assignment as following along the chart of “ages & stages” in the first class (but not including adolescence). You will use one theory/level per age/stage. HOWEVER, Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory and Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory can be used for any age period. For Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory and Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, you do not have to use each level/concept. For example, for Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory, you can just talk about the Exosystem, rather than talking about the Microsystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem, and Mesosystem. Structure of the Paper : 1. Start with an introduction paragraph to describe what the paper is about. Start general and end with your topic sentence/thesis statement. This could start with something such as “In this paper, I will…”. 2. The body of your paper should focus on the theories. Each theory should have its own paragraph. Make sure to explain the theory and the specific stage you are discussing; be sure to draw explicit links to key terms and concepts for each developmental stage you are using. Each stage or level needs to be supported with at least one personal example. Be descriptive! Make sure to cite when needed (see plagiarism section in syllabus). 3. End with a concluding paragraph in which you summarize what you have written in the body. Then, reflect on the material. How does knowing about these theories help make sense of your experiences? How could understanding these theories help you in your future career?
Formatting The paper should be 5 pages, + or - half a page (you can write 4.5 pages up to 5.5 pages). Any more or less pages will see a one-point deduction per page (e.g., over by 2 pages = 2-point deduction). There is no word count. Formatting must follow APA guidelines (e.g., font, spacing, citations, references, etc.). Please include a cover page and a list of references. These will NOT be included in the page count. Please submit the assignment as a Word Document on Moodle by the deadline (Wednesday, February 22 nd by 11:59pm). If you run into technical/Moodle problems, submit the paper to me via email ( christine.kinsley@concordia.ca ) as soon as possible. If it is submitted after 11:59pm, 5% will automatically be deducted, no exceptions. Guidelines Follow APA! If you need help, this (OWL Purdue) is a great resource to use.
