3-1 Discussion In Glenda’s case I would opt to go with existential therapy over person-centered therapy. I say this because, from the vignette we learn that Glenda has concerns regarding her many superficial relationships, which in turn, leads to her feeling that she has nothing left but a shallow, empty existence. Existential therapy would be a better option over person-centered therapy is because it will help Glenda in heightening her own sense of awareness which will help her realize that an alternate reality can exist for her. Once there, Glenda will realize that she is in charge of making positive changes for herself in her new authentic reality. However, currently I feel Glenda’s lifestyle has led her to develop existential neurosis, and existential anxiety. Existential therapy can also help with Glenda’s neurosis and anxiety, in that, it will help her to focus on self- awareness which can be achieved through freedom, choice, and responsibility. This will help bring authenticity to Glenda’s inauthentic existence. “The aim of therapy is to assist clients in moving toward authenticity and learning to recognize when they are deceiving themselves” (Deurzen, 2012). One of the benefits of existential therapy is that it is not technique-oriented, allowing for a wide variety of approaches to help understand the client. The existential approach does not present a particular way of connecting and looking to reality” (Corey, 2017). This gives flexibility in helping clients tune into the basic dimensions of the human condition. From a multicultural standpoint existential therapy tends to focus on the I/Thou relationship, lending itself to be applied in almost any individual, with any problem, in any setting. One disadvantage of existential therapy is that if the client isn’t into deep-reflection or self-examination, this approach probably will not work for them. It is imperative that the client is able to delve into their past in order to find the root cause of their restricted existence. Corey, G. (2017).
