C ONTENT Directions: For each of the module activities listed below, type at least two full sentences describing what you learned for each activity. Activity Notes 1 READ Chapter Eleven Personality is a long term pattern of one's actions and traits that affects how we act, think, feel and behave in situations and can not be easily changed. The most commonly used way to assess personality is the MMPI, this is a test that is multiple choice ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The MMPI is scored to get a clinical profile of up to 10 different scales. Listen to the Lecture Self- esteem is how you feel about yourself and how you view yourself. Having high self esteem can make you more confident, less likely to feel hurt by bullying and more likely to bounce back. Low self-esteem even temporarily can make you more judgmental and it may be a lot harder for these people where they receive criticism. ENGAGE in Multimedia Activities: Watch The Self Video (Video 15) in the Discovering Psychology Series How we set goals for ourselves can affect our outcomes. In the video the guy was setting low goals for himself and as time went on with the test his score decreased whereas the other person who took the test set high goals for themselves and got better scores. Complete the Modified Myers Briggs Test. Report how this can be used to assess personality I got ESFJ as my results for personality. The test was very easy and only took about 5-10 minutes. This test can be used to assess personality by asking personal questions about day to day life, from what you feel in social events, to what you prefer to do with free time and how you process information. This test asks some of the same questions in different ways to get a better understanding and specific answer.
Activity Notes 1 Read the Infographic about the Birth Order Effect Firstborns are often more parent pleasing, they are most likely to have a parent role in siblings life and like order. Characteristics are they follow direction well and are reliable, conscientious, structured, cautious, controlling and achieving. Middle Children are more go with the flow they tend to be unbiased and are often the mediator when other siblings are fighting. Middle children characteristics are people pleasing, somewhat rebellious, good friend, peacemaker and social. Middle children also are more likely to be asked for money from their siblings. The baby of the family, due to not having as much discipline as their older sibling, these kids learn that being funny gains people's trust. The youngest characteristics are fun-loving, uncomplicated, manipulative, outgoing, attention seeking and self-centered. Only children are typically more mature for their age, they do not grow up with other kids and are primarily surrounded by adults. They are typically high achievers. Characteristics for only children are maturity, perfectionism, conscientiousness and diligence. Complete Catell’s 16 Personality Traits test. Report how this can be used to assess personality I was not surprised with any of my scores on this test, I feel like I know myself pretty well. This test can be used to assess people's personality by asking a lot of questions but many very similarly. This test also asked about hobbies which I believe was to “stereotype” in a way what people like what. Lastly this score gives you a range of where you fall on a scale from low to high and that can tell you where you might need to better improve. 1 Expand these boxes (in Word) as needed A PPLICATION Directions: Respond to the prompt below, being sure to use and cite the material from the lecture, textbook, and activities. Your response should be at least 150 words in length. ± Imagine that you are having a debate with a group of friends about what “causes” someone’s personality. Some of your friends are arguing that people are born with their personality already intact. Others are arguing that it can be shaped by their environment. Given what you know about personality from this module, how will you contribute to this debate? What will you argue? Given what I know about this module I would say that people's personality is shaped by the environment, but it is very hard to change. Growing up in a household with parents who do not show love or affection can affect how you show love and affection, but if they were to split and the child now sees what love and affection is like it could change how the child gives and receives affection. According to Openstax: Psychological approaches “Most contemporary psychologists believe temperament has a biological basis due to its appearance very early in our lives (Rothbart, 2011). As you learned when you studied lifespan development, Thomas and Chess (1977) found that babies could be categorized into one
of three temperaments: easy, difficult, or slow to warm up. However, environmental factors (family interactions, for example) and maturation can affect the ways in which children’s personalities are expressed (Carter et al., 2008).” This proves that what we grow up around can affect how we live and can be changed when a factor that affects our personality is changed. Your response should be at least 150 words in length. ± Choose ONE thing (concept, idea, definition, theory, etc.) that you learned in this module and describe how it relates to some aspect of your life. One thing that I learned from this module was how setting goals for yourself depending on how high or low you set them can affect the outcome and how you view the results of your goals can determine what kind of person you are. According to Openstax: Psychology Learning Approaches “Researchers have found that people with an internal locus of control perform better academically, achieve more in their careers, are more independent, are healthier, are better able to cope, and are less depressed than people who have an external locus of control (Benassi, Sweeney, & Dufour, 1988; Lefcourt, 1982; Maltby, Day, & Macaskill, 2007; Whyte, 1977, 1978, 1980).” Depending how you respond to certain things such as goals you may have failed or achieved can help tell you what type of personality you have and how it can further affect your life.
