2 Group Therapy has been around for a long time, since the early 1900’s. Group Therapy is a form of counseling offered to people who want to seek comfort, feedback, and overall build and be a part of a community that understands them. Group therapy has many things to offer, and some people prefer group therapy over individual therapy. Group therapy may not be for everyone, but it definitely has its purpose. And that purpose has helped many people who struggle with things like substance abuse, anxiety, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, etc. Group therapy is a great approach to use when dealing with substance abuse and/or any other mental health disorder. Joseph Hersey Pratt was known as the father of group therapy. In 1905 he started to work with a group of eight people where they all were diagnosed with tuberculosis, located in Greater Boston (Ezhumalai, 2018). He would hold classes for those people where they would be able to relate and find things that they had in common with their experiences. As more time went on, he found that the results were positive and that the eight people were showing great progress with their emotional and mental state. In 1936, they started to incorporate group therapy within prisons and also patients who were discharged from psychiatric hospitals. Eventually group therapy was extended to people with neurosis, alcoholics, substance abuse, disturbed children, and even post traumatic stress disorder which started to be very common during and after World War II (Ezhumalai, 2018). During World War II, group therapy had a major growth spurt due to the amount of trauma along with the understaff military hospitals. Both the United States and England adapted to group therapy so that they were able to help a large number of individuals at once. After World War II they found group therapy effective and kept using it, even to this day.
3 Although group therapy is quite common and effective, it can often be confused with support groups. Group therapy and support groups do share similarities; however, they are quite different from one another. The main difference is the person who leads the group/ For group therapy the group is led by a counselor or therapist with credentials. Sometimes the group is led by two or more professionals, that will guide the group and work through all the topics they want to go through. Whereas a support group is led by someone who has personal experience and wants to share their story with others so that other people understand they are not alone. Support groups allow people to tell their stories and share their thoughts and opinions on what works for them, affects them, triggers them, etc. Group therapy is more about give professional help to a group all at once where a support group is about connecting with one another and help guiding each other through the similar problems they share (Malhotra, 2022). Support groups often are less formal and have less structure than group therapy does. Which depending on the person can be a better fir for them. Both groups are very beneficial and often times individuals will attend group therapy and then continue with support groups. It is very common for people who struggle with substance and/or alcohol use to participate in group therapy and even in support groups. Group therapy is good for people who struggle with substance abuse because it provides structure, and they are goal orientated. Group therapy allows people among the group to create goals either individually or as a group where they can work towards that goal and show their progress. Group therapy will help encourage people to be vulnerable with not only others but with themselves, it will also provide a community, while also allowing them to reduce isolation. Group therapy is also known to widen the individual’s perspective, so they get an outside look on their life and their progress. Lastly, group therapy also provides more evidence for people to show that they are making progress

4 (SAMHSA, 2020). Sometimes people find comfort in seeing their progress so it’s nice that group therapy can allow people to see proof of the progress they are making. There are many different types of therapy that can work for people who struggle with substance use but group therapy is definitely an approach to consider. Group therapy has evolved from when it first started to what it is now. Group therapy is a common form of therapy that has helped many people. Group therapy has a lot to offer to patients who want to seek a community, perspective, guidance, and structure. There are many things’ people can learn from group therapy and take from it.
