PSY 328 Project One Template For this project, you will write a theory application paper; you will apply theories of personality to yourself, someone you know, or someone you have read about in a biography or autobiography. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. 1. Identify who you are applying theories of personality to and explain why. Your response should be about 3 to 5 sentences in length. The person that I am going to apply the theories of personality to in this project is myself. I want to do this is for several reasons regarding both my personal and professional life. Since I had been diagnosed with mental illness when I was a child, I think that it’s important for me to evaluate myself to see if there are alternative ways to looking at my personality and behaviors. I also feel this is important professionally, because if I want to become a therapist being self- aware is something that would be ideal to being able to help others. 2. Describe how components of a personality theory of your choice relate to your subject. Your response should be about 6 to 10 sentences in length and include the following: A. Components of personality theory, including but not limited to traits, behaviors, motives, or defense mechanisms B. Multiple components from the theory applied to your subject with examples (i.e., behaviors that exemplify the concepts) C. Citations when you are describing the theory The personality theory that I’ve chosen is the Humanistic Theory. The humanistic approach to personality theory is that we need to assess people as a whole when looking into their personality and mental health (Sinnott, 2008). Humanism does acknowledge biology, but that free will and the environment enable us to change our behavior. This relates to myself as the subject in that I do look at human beings mental health and personality as a whole. I think that the body and mind are connected and need to be acknowledged when looking at someone’s personality and mental state. My sense of self was skewed as a child and self-esteem was lowered due to the behavior of my mother growing up, which I modeled my own self-esteem after. I try to take responsibility for my actions and my progress, knowing that in order to reach enlightenment I need to develop my sense of self through social, mental and physical well-being. These are all listed in the hierarchy of needs that humanism is looking at. 3. Describe how components of a second personality theory of your choice relate to your subject. Citations when you are describing the theory The second personality theory that I’ve chosen is the Biological perspective. The reason that I chose this is because it is the opposite of the Humanistic theory yet could also apply to my personality. The Biological perspective states that our personality is based on our chemical makeup and could be determined by our innate drives of fight, flight, or freeze/avoidance (Neuman, 2014). These drives that we are part of our biological 1
programming could influence how we approach situations. Having been diagnosed at a young age with a chemical imbalance causing Clinical Depression, it can be said that my personality is directly impacted by my biology. I tend to be more pessimistic, I have a high flight drive, and am prone to bouts of sadness. I am sometimes sad or anxious when everything in my life is going well, which could imply a chemical factor overriding an environmental one. 4. Describe the limitations of each of the two theories you related to your subject. Your response should be about 6 to 10 sentences in length and include at least one limitation for each theory. Humanism and behaviorism both have limitations to their theories. One limitation for both being that there is not much empirical evidence to support either theory properly. Because there is not enough empirical evidence, the effectiveness of these theories cannot be properly confirmed. Humanism also has the limitation that it does not give as much weight to scientific approaches to personality and mental health, stating that free will is the way to reach self- actualization. This can make people who suffer from mental illness feel discouraged if they cannot feel the motivation to better themselves if there may be a chemical imbalance at play. Another limitation for the biological approach would be that it doesn’t take nurture into account at all. Chemical imbalances as the cause for depression is being heavily debated (Ang et al., 2022). There are more scientists that are disagreeing with depression being caused by abnormalities with someone’s serotonin levels than ever before, and nurture should be looked at as well. 5. Explain why taking a holistic approach and applying multiple theories to a subject is better than applying only one. Your response should be about 6 to 10 sentences in length. It is important to look at multiple theories about a subject instead of just one because it gives different viewpoints. If we are only looking at one theory, we are not getting other options which would keep someone misinformed. People are complex and unique, and so what personality theory may apply to one person may not apply to others. It also seems that someone could have parts from all different theories that explain their behavior. For me, the subject of this project, I could fit into both the biological approach, having a chemical imbalance causing depression, and the humanistic approach, using my free will to try and reach self- actualization. Without applying multiple theories to a subject we are ignoring the possibility of other factors and that person may not get the help they need. 2
