Topic 5 DQ 1 (Obj. 5.3) Describe how someone who is mandated psychological services may act differently than someone who receives voluntary psychological services. Discuss the role of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation refers to the forces that drive behavior. Internal motivation arises from within, while external motivation comes from outside forces. Intrinsic motivation is when you engage in a behavior because you find it rewarding. Performing an activity for its own sake rather than from the desire for some external reward. Extrinsic motivation is when we are motivated to perform a behavior or engage in an activity because we want to earn a reward or avoid punishment. Engaging in behavior not because you enjoy it or because you find it satisfying, but because you expect to get something in return or avoid something unpleasant. Individuals who are mandated to services will have extrinsic motivation whereas an individual who is willing has intrinsic motivation. Mandated individuals are doing it to receive the completed certificate so they can get off parole and someone who does it voluntarily is doing it to better themselves in the long run. This also means that those who are mandated probably won’t benefit from services as much as those who are willing. Reference Cherry, K. (2023, December 13).
