Explain at least five elements of critical thinking that you found in the reading material. Critical thinking is the ability to think for yourself and form an educated opinion about a particular dialogue within your academic field of study without interjecting your personal feelings. “Critical thinking” is one of those things that everyone agrees is important. It is widely regarded as a fundamental aim in education, and as a desirable feature of employees and citizens” (Sternberg, Roediger, & Halpern, 2007). The five elements of critical thinking that I believe are important after reading the materials are: Identification, this is one of the first components of the critical thinking process, being able to understand the situation and all of the mechanics surrounding the problem and how it will impact your decisions. Research, before making a decision on something that will have a major impact on the outcome, you have to make an assessment about the problem, and you should not rely on someone else’s opinions. You have to be able to evaluate the information that is essential for the problem. For this class students were asked to write a research paper, which is one of the most important techniques for teaching critical thinking skills and can then be used across any discipline. The significance of critical thinking is having the ability to make educated decisions, through creative problem solving that are challenging and demanding. Inference, being able to come to conclusions through processing information based on the data that you have researched and rely on the facts. Identifying Biases; to many of us being biased is probably one of the most difficult, problematic, and complicated issues that we deal with on a daily basis. Being able to set aside our own perceived judgements and look at it from a different point of view is an important part of being able to think critically. My first article that demonstrates a good quality of critical thinking skills is “Inequality, Income, and Poverty and Comparative Global Evidence”. This article exhibited critical thinking, it showed the significance, the role, and how it involves income growth and how to reduce poverty. The article was not written with any biases in my opinion, and the authors arguments was supportive in finding solutions to alleviate poverty globally. My second article is “Fighting poverty and the deep roots of inequality” it lacked critical thinking, because the article lacked the facts behind what was the cause and major factors behind poverty. The data also appeared biased in the writers comments that was stated throughout the article. The article data was based upon scientific evidence that seemed artificial. The article was short, direct, and straight to the point, and it lacked significant data on fighting poverty.
