2-2 Case Study 3 Milestone One: Short Paper Sarah Villanueva PSY-200 Foundations of Addictions Southern New Hampshire University Professor Wills
Client Information and Presenting Problem Katie is a 35-year-old female and a mother of 2 young children. She is a wife to her husband that is name Luis. The drug of choice is prescription drugs and/or pain medicine. Her addictions include pain medicine and soma which is a muscle relaxants. Her husband believes that she had relapsed and is very concerned about her being committed on saying sober. At his request along with Katies father wants an intervention. Both family members are concerned and agreed to participate. Katie was in a car accident in her mid-twenties and was prescribed pain medication because of lower back pain. This accident caused her to get addicted to pain medication and she stated that the pills made her feel wonderful. She was coping with these pain medication because she gets too stressed. For awhile she would go to the doctor and was able to get prescribed medication. Then she would try to get them from anyone who had access to them or from family and friends. Once that was not an option anymore, she would order them on the internet to get the pain pills. Katie was treated for abusing the pain medication and it appeared that she did benefit from the treatment. Once the treatment ended there were no follow-ups because she believed that she did not need that. She stated that this care afterwards would remind her of the low time in her time. Unfortunately, after this Lewis had found out that she was using their money to purchase more pain pills in result this affected their finances.
History of Prescription Drugs Katie has substance addiction also known as a drug addiction. This is a neuropsychiatric disorder that is characterized by a recurring desire to continue taking the drug despite damaging consequences. Pain medication that is not being prescribed or not being properly handled when getting prescribed is drug abuse. Soma was approved for clinical use as a muscle relaxant by the Food and Drug Administration in 1959. There were about 10 million prescriptions issued in 2006 according to the IMS Health. As of 2000, this pain killer was listed as the 20 th most abused drug from the Drug Abuse Warning Network. This pain killer remains a popular muscle relaxant and in the 2000s accounting for 21% of all skeletal muscle relaxant prescriptions in the United States. Impact Katie’s addiction to pain medications has impacted her life. Since the past several months her pain pill seeking behaviors has returned. They had their second child around six months ago. This has caused financial stress within the marriage. She became the sole provider because her husband got hurt at work. Since being at home he has been doing home repair projects and there was a package delivery of 100 Vicodan pain pills. After more research he found more evidence of previous FedEx delivery that has been several times during the past few months. Moreover, this addiction has created conflict with her husband because he is getting tired of it. If she gets worse the father stated she might lose her marriage, her children, and probably her job. Most importantly she could lose her life.

Results The notion of rehab was brought up but after Katie wined and saying she cannot be away from her child her husband gave in. Lewis and Katie decided to take an alternative plan and avoid going back to rehab. The plan was to attend counseling once per week and completely stop all pain medication to remain abstinent. If she was not able to stay clean, she would agree to a full course of at least one month of treatment in the program that she had previously attended. Katie was off to a great start by keeping her first individual session and stated she remained cleaned by not taking any pain pills of any kind and was not experiencing any withdrawal or detox symptoms. By the second individual session Katie was a no call no show and as weeks had passed there was no communication if or when she would be returning for her sessions. Therefore, nothing was resolved in the brief therapy she had got. During the short amount of time of counseling treatment, the client responded poorly and not positively. She had an attitude of “not needing help” meaning she can do this on her own and she is fine. I believe the client has relapse especially more so because she missed her second individual session and there has not been any communication if she plans to return.
