Assignment #3: Classroom Observation & Analysis Due Week 6 Environments have an impact on how children feel, and therefore, how they behave. Some children (like adults) are highly sensitive and others less so. Please consider all children’s temperaments and experiences when observing the classroom structure. Directions: Observe a classroom at PCDC or another location. You need to be observing and NOT interacting with children when you do this. Read the required reading for Week 5 before you observe. ** You may not observe everything on this list. If you don’t observe something, leave it blank and be sure to complete the ‘what would you change for that environmental component. Submit this form (handwritten) in class. Submit reflection on Turnitin. Space/design : Describe, Effect on behavior? Level of Stimulation? What would you change? Lighting Plenty of natural light, skylights, and covers over brighter fluorescent lights I wouldn’t change anything regarding the amount of natural light and how it is presented in the room. Clutter Minimal, clean teacher counters and spaces I was very happy to see that there was not much clutter in this classroom. Bright colors The toy bins were bright colored I would have added bright colors in more of a color scheme. Like picking 2 or 3 bright colors, versus the random ones that are represented in this classroom. Container colors Mainly tan and wicker baskets I appreciated the more natural colored storage containers in this classroom. I would personally have more baskets and round containers, but they executed
well on the natural color part. Wall decorations Child art everywhere and some themed art The walls felt covered. I would have minimized how much stuff is on the walls and structured it differently. Noise level Inside voices, except during transitions, some big feelings were being expressed. I find that large numbers of children are going to make noise, but I don't think I would have done anything different than the teacher in this classroom. Classroom area “hot spots? Block area Hot spots vary from classroom to classroom. I personally like to encourage children to play in the art area and dramatic play. ‘Runways’ (open-pathways) Blocked by shelves This classroom was set up well, in a way that there were not any runways for kids Self-regulation area Quiet space library in the back corner of the room. Rug and small couch with a shelf of books I personally like enclosed areas for self-regulation space, such as a cube or tent Softs spaces Couches and rugs There were minimal amounts of soft space. I would have added more pillows throughout the room Private spaces Bathroom around the corner I wouldn’t have changed anything regarding this topic Child-sized furniture? Children’s feet touch floor when sitting? Yes, chairs, shelves, and tables I wouldn’t have changed anything Interest areas Block area, writing area, book/quiet space, dramatic play, All the top interest areas were in this classroom. I didn’t see
clearly defined table space, and art area a specific science or exploration are. So that would be my only change. Routines and Transitions: Describe, Effect on behavior? Level of Stimulation? What would you change? Waiting more than 2 minutes without anything to do Transitions were kind of drawn out, but children stayed busy I would have other teachers spread out and more prepared for transitions Describe, Effect on behavior? Level of Stimulation? What would you change? Waiting in line Outside time line up, squares on the floor to guide lining up I wouldn’t have changed anything Transitioning as a whole group 2 min warning, 1 min warning by timer and teacher. Teacher had children freeze by turning the lights on and off I personally don’t like using the lights as a warning, it is abrupt and can hurt kids eyes. I prefer noises or timers. How many transitions? 2 during the time that I was there Freeplay, clean up, and then outside Transitions were fairy smooth Visual Aids Pictures on shelves. Labels to indicate that four kids in each space I liked the visuals in this classroom Being told what to do “Play nice” “you need to clean up” “you can say, help and please” I would use more descriptive and positive language, like what we have learned in class Positive Descriptive Acknowledgeme “Yay” “Good job” “Be careful” “Good words” Same as above

Place for adult(s) to sit comfortably? couple adult chairs Reflection/analysis questions on following page….. Reflection/Analysis: Incorporate specifics from your observation and required readings to complete your reflection. Where did you observe? I observed at PCDC: the Sloth classroom. Once when our whole class went and then again on 10/22. Reflect and describe how each of the following classroom aspects are affecting children’s social-emotional well-being, behavior, social interactions and cultural identity. Space/Design This gives children the perspective of the classroom and a visual expectation. Design is important for functionality. Routines & Transitions Children need consistency and patterns to help them process what is going on in life. Play Areas Children are meant to play and explore the world with their bodies and minds through play. Aesthetics The way a room is presented helps a child feel secure and comfortable. Interpersonal (relationships or communication between people) Connections with adults helps a child learn to interact with peers and others in general. They learn to handle their emotions and how to respond

to interpersonal joys and conflicts. Based on the reading and information shared in class, what suggestions would you make for this classroom? Why? Be specific/describe. I made all of my suggestions in the chart format. Thinking back to when you were a preschool-aged child, how do you think you would have done in a classroom like this? What would have worked well for you? What else would you have needed? I would have done just fine in this type of classroom. It is light and there are plenty of things to explore and play with. There is a consistent routine and pattern to the day. All things that I needed as a young preschooler. Minimum 2 page reflection. Submit on Turnitin.
