As not only a special education teacher, but a teacher in general, I have learned that it takes a team to help with decision making process. Special education can be a challenging field where there is various students with different disabilities. Challenges can arise that a teacher may not have ever dealt with before, so we need to lean on other educators and even administration. It is important when making informed decisions that others be consulted to ensure the student is receiving the most benefits and services offered. I currently teach 3rd-5th grade special education resource where evidence based practices are highly encouraged. Evidence-based decisions are very important when supporting special needs students and the basis of their IEP. First the teacher will determine the level at which the student is performing which is really important so the team can track the student's progress throughout the school year. Next, the team will decide on various strategies and set reasonable and attainable goals for the student and identify any accommodations needed to aid in reaching these goals. Then, when the goals are set and agreed upon by the team, the teacher will track the student’s progress by collecting data throughout the IEP year. I think that this can be effective if the teacher is working on these goals with their students consistently and tracking it as well. These practices help special education teachers see the methods that may or may not work. It allows teachers to keep a record of data and inform the team how the student is or isn’t progressing. Some of the challenges that come along with evidence based practices include; inconsistency, time management, lack of training and knowledge. The best way to overcome some of these challenges is for teachers to use their resources such as getting the necessary continuous training and seeking help from other teachers and leadership as well. My current job has co-teachers, mentor teachers, and master teachers in place to help guide other teachers that need assistance with how to help our students succeed. “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12:).
