After reading Chapter 5, I have acquired some knowledge on the North American Indigenous peoples' beliefs and values. There are many stories told amongst different groups of American Indians that deal with hardship, struggle, genocide, oppression, loss, pride, resilience, and hope. These stories help guide and teach them about their ways of life. American Indians have ways of dealing with illnesses within their culture that do not involve western medicine. There are “healing practices to assist a person when he or she is out of
balance, stuck on a feather barb, and needs to find the way back to live a good life (Gonzalez, J., & Trimble, J., 2016, p. 101). I have learned that there are people who will perform these practices on a member of their culture to heal them. Other ceremonies that are more complicated will only be performed by “trained healers who have been delegated by the spirits, often as a birthright” (Gonzalez, J., & Trimble, J., 2016, p. 102). Not all people of this culture can seek these healing practices because of their geographic location, and they are not near these healers. Differences also exist among the Native peoples such integration, assimilation, separation, and marginalization. These differences will play a role in how they need to be taught
and counseled. Teachers and counselors need to know as much as possible about these differences and how the cultures live in today’s world. Those that are immersed in their own culture could know a lot about their own history and the traumas such as, “centuries of massacres, disease, forced relocations, force removal of children, loss of land, broken treaties, and other betrayals, unemployment, extreme poverty, and racism” (Gonzalez, J., & Trimble, J., 2016, p. 103).
It is important to know your students and clients before teaching or treating them because
some techniques or methods may do more harm than good.
