Myra Gharbarran / CSHR1010 - Assignment #1 / October 1, 2023
The two topics that stand out amongst the rest are employee selection and training and
development. These two topics are important in my career as they are major aspects of my
current employment. Although it isn’t necessarily within HRM, I find myself volunteering
amongst staff as their HR representative. Employee selection has tested my skills and abilities to
filter through applicants through competency assessments. For training and development of new
and current employees, I’m learning from others through actively present situations, while also
teaching in return. As the current position I hold is only temporary, it’s still vital that I maintain a
professional mindset to possible mistakes I have and will make.
A current strength I have is focusing on the training and development of the employees.
What I’m successful at is behaviour modelling as it allows new employees to see what is
expected of them, and maybe take initiative. During training sessions, I like to motivate and
provide positive criticism as I see greater success rates with confidence. This way, employees
come out with a positive experience that allows for the understanding of the “link between the
effort they put into training and the payoff”(pg.265). The current opportunity for development is
employee selection to “maximize hits and avoid misses”(pg.218). Through this area of
development, I want to prevent opportunity costs where someone who had the ability to succeed
was passed on due to my high expectations. As the applicant develops their skills through the
structured interviewing process ( situational and behavioural questions), I’m also developing my
skills in being more open minded. This allows a new employee to develop those skills after being
hired rather than being present with everything needed.
Within training and development, I would like to create an organized schedule when
training new employees, allowing for consistency and preventing confusion. The new schedule
will be mindful of employees’ learning abilities and what helps them understand concepts best. It

would be ideal to establish a proper schedule before seasonal hiring occurs in October. This is a
goal as I find myself training new employees alongside other managers which helps take the
weight off of myself. Measuring progress is dependent on employee selection. Through the
hiring process if strong candidates are chosen, it may only take a week’s worth of shifts to
understand roles and responsibilities. From previous training experience, I have the essential
skills to stay motivated as well as motivate. Peak season is the busiest time of year, which means
that training and development for everyone (myself included) is important. The deadline to have
an established consistent training schedule for new hires would be by the end of November,
allowing myself to test out the schedule, and make changes if required.
Within employee selection, I would like to be more open when it comes to hiring new
seasonal employees. Although the hiring process isn’t solely my responsibility, my rubric is the
company’s goal. The company’s goal is to not only provide experience for students, but to also
hire skill equipped individuals who can handle or learn to handle various clientele and situations.
As I have been with the company for 4 years, part-taking in all the positions allows myself to
understand what skills are required; fast thinking, creativity, productivity, taking initiative,
adaptability for different kinds of clientele. Although having certain standards when hiring
seasonal employees allows for an easier transition, I would adapt the training and development
model in which suits the hired candidates. Measuring progress with this goal is dependent on
how many candidates that I can hire, as well as how many are successful after the peak season. I
will know if I met my goal through reviewing the new employees’ performance, during, and
before peak season comes to an end. I will be developing the skills I need to accomplish the goal
during the hiring process as there is an in-store hiring event occurring in October. The deadline
I’m setting is by the end of November as that is when the hiring process for seasonal ends.
