Week 3 Discussion Describe a scenario working with a client in which you received feedback from one of your supervisors (either past or present). What kind of feedback was provided? What could your supervisor have done differently to make the feedback more constructive or actionable? (2 paragraphs) Explain what kind of feedback you respond best towards and what incentives you would be willing to work for to improve your performance? (1 paragraph) Feedback is a big responsibility when working in any type of field, but I feel working in ABA and with children with different kinds of needs feedback is probably the most important. “Effective supervision is crucial to the quality of ongoing behavioral services,” (Cooper et al., 2020). There have been many times my supervisors have given me feedback. I am the type of worker that I feel like I am doing something wrong I will ask for help or sometimes my supervisor will that I am struggling or need help and will save me. In my current job I am a behavior technician at a high school, the position is new, and my team is working on educating the school what a behavior technician is. I have a student who is below and behind on their schooling/education. He was put on my caseload for self-advocacy and for task completion. When I met with him the first time, I introduced myself and then we began working on his assignments. I then wrote my notes, stating how the student and I worked on his worksheet. After about a day or two, my supervisor came to my office and let me know how and what she wanted me to do with the student. She did not want me to help him the whole time due to him having a self-advocacy goal, but to just lean in and check on him and let him know I am there if he needs help. I began doing just that and I must say it has helped the student become more confident and independent that he will self-advocate for himself to myself and even his peers. We just need to work on self-advocating with the teachers. Student is staying on task now that he self-advocates for at least five minutes. He has not met any goal, but we have just started services about a month ago and there has already been so much progress. I think one thing my supervisor could have done differently is watch me in the classroom setting and then be there to be able to give me feedback immediately, especially if there is something we are doing different with this student than the others. Instead of her just coming to my office to tell me she could have made a classroom visit and modeled what she wanted me to do. I respond best with modeling feedback, I am a visual learner, so whenever I can have my higher ups model something for me that they want me to do will help me learn faster. I am always willing to work on my performance, which is why I took a job at the high school because I have worked in clinics and in home. I want to expand my knowledge in ABA in all the different settings. I am also thinking about going further and going into the prison system and work ABA in there. I also work best with just having a
conversation while having feedback, like I love it when a supervisor talks to me and does not try to belittle me or make me feel any less of a person because I made a mistake, we are all human. I have worked with many supervisors that belittle their workers and act like they are better than everyone because they are the supervisors, and that is not the type of supervisors we need or want in our field. “It is important supervisors to provide feedback in order for staff members to learn and grow,” (Mayer et al., 2018).
