Bruton, Erika Quiz 6 HLTH 616: Health and Wellness Coaching Quiz 6 (10 points) Please write short answers to each of the following questions. 1. Define motivational interviewing (MI). What are the four general principles of MI? (2 points) a. Motivational interviewing is a therapy technique that assists people in resolving conflicted sentiments and fears to uncover the internal drive to improve their behavior. It is a realistic, compassionate, and short-term strategy that recognizes how tough it is to make life adjustments. b. General Principles i. Express Empathy - Motivational interviewing relies heavily on empathy. The therapist pays close attention to the patient and expresses that they understand their feelings, beliefs, and experiences. ii. Support Self-Efficacy - Motivational interviewing assumes that clients have the strength and ability to develop and change, even if previous attempts have failed. The therapist encourages the patient's conviction in their own ability to change. The therapist may do this by drawing attention to the patient's abilities, strengths, or previous triumphs. iii. Roll with Resistance - If the patient is having difficulty changing, they may refuse prospective solutions or the therapist's advice. If the therapist encounters resistance during motivational interviewing, they avoid getting defensive or combative. Instead, they assist the patient in identifying the problem and finding a remedy on their own. The therapist does not force their point of view on the patient, but rather assists the patient in considering many points of view. iv. Develop Discrepancy - The therapist assists the patient in identifying gaps between their current situation and their long-term aspirations. What attitudes and actions must they adopt to attain their objectives? The therapist assists the patient in identifying this disparity and finding strategies to lessen it. 2. Name four types of reflections used in MI and give an example of each. (4 points) a. Open Questions i. How would you like things to be different? b. Affirmations i. If I were in your shoes, I don’t know if I could have managed nearly so well. c. Reflective Listening i. If I were in your shoes, I don’t know if I could have managed nearly so well.
Bruton, Erika Quiz 6 d. Summaries i. “Let me see if I understand, you want to stay out past curfew to hang out with your girlfriends because Yaya is leaving for a week?” 3. What is rolling with resistance? How can you as a coach decrease the likelihood of resistance talk during coaching sessions? (2 points) a. "Rolling with Resistance" is an important strategy that recognizes that merely assaulting or addressing someone directly does not always work. In fact, it may push individuals deeper into their shells or cause them to be excessively defensive or confrontational themselves. b. Possibilities of decreasing rolling with resistance: i. Listen reflectively. ii. Ask what the alternative view could be. iii. Be patient. 4. What does “developing discrepancy” mean? What tools can a coach use to develop discrepancy? (2 points) a. Another fundamental component of motivational interviewing. In the context of rolling with resistance, you can do it after you have reflected back to them what they are saying by asking them in a non-confrontational way how their views, comments fit in with larger goals or objectives that they have previously expressed, if there is an obvious discrepancy. b. Asking direct questions, active listening, etc.
