Assignment 3 – Diagnostic Medical Sonographers Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is a position that I have heard of but did not know what they do for a living. These sonographers operate special equipment to create images, conduct tests, and work closely with physicians and surgeons who view the images and test the results to assess and diagnose certain medical conditions. They have many tasks and duties which can include preparing the patients by explaining the procedure and answering questions. Another task is to prepare the exam rooms and maintain diagnostic equipment, operate the equipment, and review the images and test results to check for quality and adequate coverage. They specifically create images, which are also known as sonograms that depict the body’s organs and tissues. This will typically be the first imaging test to suspect a disease. How does sonography work? Sonography uses high-energy sound waves to produce images within the body. They use an instrument known as a transducer to scan the body parts of the patient’s body that are being examined. This emits pulses of sound that bounce back, which causes echoes and are used for diagnosis. To become a sonographer, you will need an associate, bachelor’s, or certificate to obtain this position. In 2022, there was an average wage of $81,350. Sonographers receive more money in outpatient care centers versus medical laboratories, physician offices, and hospitals. Luckily like many healthcare professionals, this position is set to increase by 10% between 2022 and 2032. This is a much faster growth average than many occupations. Around 9,60 openings will be projected each year.
With the salary, job outlook, and a minimum of an associate degree entering the field would be a great position that many could enter. I learned much about what diagnostic medical sonographers do and how successful you can become with this career path.
