SEI-45 Hour Module 5 Lesson 1 5 Stages of Writing Development 5 stages of writing development Describe characteristics of each stage List specific strategies that address writing skills in the elementary classroom Scribbling/ Drawing This is the stage where children begin their writing career. Children should have thick markers, crayons, and unlined paper as good writing tools in the elementary classroom. Letter-like forms & shapes At this stage of writing development, children begin to display their understanding that writers use symbols to convey their meaning. Children in an elementary classroom should have access to tubs of markers, crayons, and paper to remain good writers. Teachers need to ask and answer, "What does this say?" for children. Letters As a child's writing continues to develop, they begin to use random letters. Teachers need to give elementary students at this stage different types of paper, including memo pads, envelopes, lined paper as well as some smaller pens and pencils. Tubs of foam letters and letter magnets are also handy for students. Letters & spaces Children start to point to individual words on a page when reading, and work to match their speech to a printed word. Teachers need to watch young writers insert important spaces in their own work. These can be guided either by an index finger in-between each word or by lines drawn by the teacher Conventional writing & spelling At this stage, children spell most words correctly, with a reliance on phonics knowledge to spell longer words. At this stage it is important for the teachers to honor the writing efforts of the students and find opportunities to have children share their work with others and display their efforts. Instructions: Using researched information and topics covered in the Lesson Presentation, complete the graphic Organizer, defining details of each writing stage and listing specific strategies that address student writing skills.
