ELED 258 Text Set Lucy Angulo Hailey Mahan Introduction This text set includes an array of LGBTQ+ content that both creates a connection for young readers, while also educating them. This set is appropriate for sixth graders and will explore novels, poetry, videos, and more. A few of the ELA standards met within this set are RL 6.6, RL 6.9, and one could appeal to W 6.3 A through personal reflective writing activities after exploring a text. These texts could be used to educate students on LGBTQ+ history, or to give students a character to relate to, and help work through their feelings. These texts could be used in a classroom if a teacher chose to do a social issues project, or a self identity project. The teacher could give students this text set, and allow them to choose their sources. LGBTQIA+ Text Set Different Kinds of Fruit Author: Kyle Lukoff Publisher and Year: Dial Books for Young Reader, 2022 Genre: Realistic Fiction General Reading level: The reading level is for grade levels 5-9. Considering the main character is a rising sixth grader, the content is appropriate for the audience. Lexile Measure: 820L Short Summary & Critical Review : Different Kinds of Fruits follows Annabelle, a rising sixth grader, who is going into her new school year. She is at the same school she's been at her whole life, so she doesn’t expect anything crazy to come! Suddenly her life is changed when Bailey moves to town and becomes her best friend. Annabelle gets confused when she starts to think she might be more than friends with Bailey. Her point of view has changed, because Annabelle has never liked girls before. Along with the struggles of growing up, she must now face a huge question in her identity. While discovering new things about herself, Annabelle faces some pushback from her community. How will this text help students learn about your selected topic and related standards? This text brings forward a fresh perspective of a young queer child. The literary devices used and themes throughout this text are appropriate for the audience. Short Summary & Critical Review : This poem uses imagery, alliteration, and extended metaphors to teach about the deep feeling of one’s identity. The poem focuses on the feeling called by your instincts to be your true self. Specifically, this poem focuses on gender identity, and feeling the instinct that this gender does not satisfy their identity. How will this text help students learn about your selected topic and related standards? This poem will educate readers on the importance of identity and doing what feels right to you. Also, this poem teaches young children to not care what others place on you, and that the only person who controls who you are, is you. In addition, this poem can also be used to meet the ELA standards that focus on different literary tools such as the earlier mentioned alliteration, imagery, and extended metaphor. ELED 258 Text Set Lucy Angulo Hailey Mahan Genre: Sports Fiction General Reading level: The reading level is for grades 4-6 which is appropriate for this story. The themes and maturity fit the grade levels as well as the message the author is trying to portray. Short Summary & Critical Review : Silas Wade is a superstar athlete in sixth grade who plays baseball at his school. He has a secret he has to keep from everyone, he thinks he is gay. While questioning his own sexuality he chooses to do a class project on Glenn Burke, a gay former baseball player. He claims to do the project because Glenn invented the high five, but secretly he chose him because of his sexuality. This is one way Silas feels comfortable sharing his sexuality with his peers, even though he is not ready to tell everyone. As time goes on, his secret becomes harder to keep and starts to cause issues in his social life. How will this text help students learn about your selected topic and related standards? This text is a personal novel that shows the mental toll that comes with having to hide one’s true self. This is a unique perspective on growing up gay, focusing more on the impact of friendships rather than a romantic aspect. A High Five for Glenn Burke pushes the importance of having a supporting community, as well as how important the need for LGBTQ+ representation in schools is. As the Crow Flies Author: Melanie Gillman Publisher and Year: Iron Circus Comics, 2017 Genre: Graphic Novel General Reading level: The reading level is for 6th-9th grade students. The plot of this story contains mature themes and concepts, which is why 6th grade is on the younger side of the audience. Short Summary & Critical Review :

Specifically an all-white Christian camp. During this time Charlie strongly questions her religion, and as the trip goes on, the thinner her beliefs spread. She meets many characters along the way, and learns the most about herself! This is a personal story of the author, and is depicted through cartoonish drawings, with realistic drawings of the nature background. How will this text help students learn about your selected topic and related standards? This text being a graphic novel makes it accessible for many more readers. Readers who want to read LGBTQ+ content might not always have resources that are at their level. This text relies on the drawings and short text to create a story, which means even those who are not strong readers can participate. Witchlings Author: Claribel A. Ortega Publisher and year: Scholastic Inc., 2022 Genre: Fantasy General Reading Level: The reading level is for students in 3rd-7th grade. Fantasy books attract a large variety and range of readers. The content is engaging and contains appropriate and educational characters. Short Summary & Critical Review: As a 12-year-old witchling living in the magical town of Raveskill, Seven Salazar is ready to participate in the Black Moon Ceremony to be placed into a coven and gain access to her full powers. However, things take a turn when Seven isn’t placed into a coven, becoming a spare. Spares are looked down on and seen as less powerful witches by the town. When Seven and the other spares try to use their powers to seal their coven, it doesn’t work, which leaves Seven with only one option. She must successfully complete the impossible task with the other spare witchlings to gain access to her full powers. Witchlings provides a fantasy option for students who are interested in the fantasy genre, LGBTQIA+ content or both. The captivating illustrations and diverse characters keep the readers engaged and wanting to learn more. How will this text help students learn about your selected topic and related standards? Witchlings provides a fantasy option for students who are interested in the fantasy genre, LGBTQIA+ content or both. Unlike the other books in this text set, the plot of this story does not directly surround an LGBTQIA+ character/issues/concept. However, the story does contain

Incorporating queer characters into the story not only helps LGBTQIA+ identifying students feel more seen, but also exposes students to different identities and people. In addition, increased representation of LGBTQIA+ characters validate queer experiences and existence in the world. It’s also known that including diverse characters in a story helps to dispel stereotypes and single stories and encourages children to be compassionate beings. For related standards, this book can help students reach ELA standard RL 6.9 which is to compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics. Witchlings by Claribel A. Ortega provides a fantasy example that contains themes and topics of LGBTQIA+ which can be compared and contrasted to the other genres of texts in this text set The Stonewall Riots: Coming Out In the Streets Author: Gayle E Pitman Publisher & Year: Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2019 Genre: Historical Nonfiction General Reading level: The reading level is for 5th grade - 8th grade students. The book does contain some violence and mature topics which is why the audience consists mostly of middle school age children. Short Summary & Critical Review: In her book, Gayle E Pitman educates readers on the Stonewall Riots that occurred in response to a police raid that happened in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan. The stonewall riots are attributed as the spark that ignited the LGBTQ+ movement. Pitman writes about queer history before the riots, during the riots, and after the riots. This book provides historical nonfiction LGBTQIA+ text which is a great option for 10-14 year old students. Being in the historical nonfiction genre, Pitman includes interviews, photos, newspaper clippings and more to capture the reader's attention. How will this text help students learn about your selected topic and related standards? By reading this book, Students will learn about the history and legacy of the LGBTQ+ movement. It is important to teach children about the history of social justice issues because it gives them a better understanding of a topic. A better understanding helps foster empathy and awareness which are two very important traits for the target audience, especially at such a developmental period. The students in these grades are at appropriate ages to understand the information presented in the video as well as reflect back on it when learning about American and African American history/contributions. Short Summary and Critical Review: This video teaches students about Alain Locke, who was a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance, making countless contributions to the African American community as well as the arts. The video goes into detail about Locke’s famous work “The New Negro” which challenges the social constructs of the 1920s and fights to create a future of equality. Alain Locke is an important historical, queer figure that students can benefit from learning about; this video does an excellent job of not only educating viewers about his contributions, but also focuses on who Alain Locke was as a person and how that influenced his work. How will this text help students learn about your selected topic and related standards? Educating students on historical, queer figures such as Alain Locke, expands their knowledge on LGBTQIA+ topics which is normally quite limited or restricted in schools. Students should be taught the whole story, including the person’s identity considering our identities play a huge role in how we behave. In addition, learning that prominent figures in our history were queer can be a huge moment for LGBTQIA+ students, making them feel more represented and seen in the classroom and society. Providing a video option for students can make the content more engaging and also can be used to meet ELA standard RH 6-8.4. Students can be instructed to watch the video and relate it back to the information they have learned in class or from texts
