1. Hyatt Regency- Provide 1 technical and 1 non-technical explanation for the collapse of the walkway. What could have been done to prevent the disaster? 2. Citicorp building- Provide 1 technical and 1 non-technical explanation for the “success” of the building. In your opinion should the Citicorp building be considered a success? Why or why not? 3. Compare and contrast the Hyatt Regency and the Citicorp building in terms of the engineer’s responsibilities and actions. 1. One technical issue for the collapse of the walkway came from the redesign. The walkway was redesigned so that some of the bolts were holding double the load. The walkways were not properly tested and the only people who knew about the redesign were the subcontracted engineers. A non-technical explanation for the collapse is poor communication between those involved in building the hotel. People were unaware of the redesign and failed to notice that some nuts were holding the weight of two walkways. If Gillum and Associates had told people about the design it most likely would have been redesigned again and not cause a fatal accident. 2. The technical cause for the almost collapse of the Citicorp building is the wrong joints being used. Lemessurier, the structural engineer, wanted welded joints for the building but instead bolted joints were used. He quickly caught this error and began repairs as soon as possible. The non-technical issue for Citicorp was poor communication between Lemessurier and his engineers. The people in charge of placing the bolts did not inform Lemessurier that they used bolted joints until it was too late. 3. The Hyatt Regency and Citicorp had similar bolt issues but one was handled better than the other. Lemessurier spoke up about the mistake made and was able to fix it before anything catastrophic happened. Whereas, Gillum decided not to tell anyone about his poor redesign which ended over a hundred lives. There was poor communication between the higher ups at these engineering firms and those in charge of building which caused these massive mistakes.
