1 Children love stories, which are one the essential sources of language for young learners (Beaty, Pratt, 2014). Therefore, I recommend Story Place: The Children’s digital learning library as a great source of age-appropriate stories and story-based activities. Story place was first launched in 2000. This website provides children with the virtual experience of Library time. The content of this website is designed for pre-school students. There are a lot of valuable materials about early literacy skills for parents and educators as well. Moreover, all the materials are provided for free. The home page contains the pre-school activity library. There are a variety of stories read aloud with illustrations. They cover different topics: colors, animals, music, etc. Every story is accompanied by online activity, additional videos, reading lists, and take-home activities. Reading lists contains books connected with the chosen story for further reading. Every book from the reading lists is linked to Charlotte Mecklenburg Library with more information about the book. This digital library contains e-book opportunities and storytime videos from different educators. Story Place is a perfect tool to develop positive literacy in young children because it successfully combines stories as an entertaining source of language and advanced technologies that attract children’s attention. I would use this website as a valuable addition to storytime. My students would enjoy using the smartboard for completing activities. Also, this website provides ideas for story-based projects that I can make with my students after reading a book. Reading lists is the most valuable service of this website for me as a teacher. I can find age-appropriate books with different topics. My students will benefit from learning new words from different stories and practice learning activities from this website.
2 Children also love music and movement exercises. Songs combined with movements are a great tool to enhance the early literacy skills of young children (Beaty, Pratt, 2014). For this literacy source, I recommend The learning station. This website promotes healthy music for a child’s heart, body, and mind. This company successfully combines nursery rhymes and movements. The Learning Station is considered the children’s educational music industry leader. The website contains a collection of 31 award-winning audio and video releases and over 400 children’s songs that are part of the academic curriculum worldwide. The movement songs are free to use. They are entertaining, dynamic, and engaging for children. There are songs for almost all the possible topics for the Early childhood curriculum. I would mainly use the songs for circle time to engage my students at the beginning of the school day and introduce a new topic or concept. I would use a smart board to demonstrate the video to my students, or I would learn the movements and show my students myself using a speaker for music. My favorite thing about the videos from this website is that many children show their movements. It can be inspiring and more engaging for my students. Also, this website contains valuable sources for educators that can help me with ideas for my students’ activities. My students will benefit from learning different songs and movements. They will learn how to pronounce words correctly as it is easier to teach with songs and rhymes. Also, I firmly believe that learning should be entertaining. As young children cannot sit still for a long time, movement exercises will be a great alternative to other literacy activities in the class.
