Should Universities be free for lower-income students?
Is free college the solution, or is affordable college the solution? The cost of college in the U.S. is rising even faster than inflation, leaving many students facing financial constraints. Education is vital to life, and many students worldwide struggle to afford college. The idea of free college education in America has been a topic of debate for many years, and currently, over 20 states in the country offer some form of free college program. However, it was only in 2021 that a nationwide free college program came close to being established, reigniting the longstanding debate over whether free college is a beneficial proposition. My proposed research question would be, “Is there a way to measure the success of graduates who received a free education vs loans?” Research has shown that free tuition programs increase college attendance and graduation rates, leading to a better-educated workforce and higher-earning consumers. This,
in turn, can help boost the economy. Conducting research for University of Texas at Arlington students, particularly those from low-income families, is a significant aspect that cannot be overlooked. This research could yield valuable insights and knowledge about various educational
opportunities these students might be unaware of but are eligible for. This would help them make
informed decisions about their future and provide them with the tools to succeed academically and professionally. By offering such research opportunities, students can stay updated with the latest field trends and developments and be better equipped to leverage their skills and knowledge in the job market. Overall, conducting research for UT Arlington's students from low-

income backgrounds is critical in bridging the educational gap and creating a level playing field for all students.
