Coming from an English Language and Literature bachelors, it feels a lot different than writing a compare and contrast paper about the different themes in Shakespeare's plays. Technical communication requires a more straight forward thinking process that involves more professional standpoints and facts rather than your own personal opinions or ideas. Collaboration is so important in technical communication because not only does it build a sense of community but also it allows feedback to be passed back and forth. What’s working, what’s not working, how things can change, etc. Additionally, different individual’s perspectives on things can help improve documents to be more concise and robust. One of the most important things I learned is you need to know their demographics. Someone who has a Masters degree in Computer Science will be vastly different from someone who is a highschool graduate. It allows you to know what language and rhetoric is appropriate for the audience to get your message across and to be clear. Some examples of channels and vehicles of communication are presentations, emails, memos, face to face training, role playing, instructional guides and more. You would determine this based on your audience and what your end goal is in communicating your message. You can determine the message that needs to be delivered to an intended audience by evaluating the who, what, when, where, and why questions. Ask investigative questions about both your audience and the purpose of the document before constructing it. This will help the deciding factor of what the message contains and how it should be delivered. Discovering if your message was delivered successfully or not can depend on the audience engagement and understanding of the topic. If there are a myriad of questions being asked, not much engagement on your social media posts, or no online traffic from your online marketing ads then it can likely be assumed that your message was not delivered successfully to your intended audience. The roles of websites and social media in technical communications is impactful and becoming more common than ever before. Marketing ads target people online, blogs promote companies, websites navigate its users to help sections or contact the business itself. It drives revenue for many companies which is why it is so crucial to focus on the correct type of audience.
