Source Evaluation Worksheet
Part I: Topic
My topic is the impact of communication in policing. I would like research more into understanding how to better develop communication between officers and the community. It can help to lead to less police brutality cases. As well as diminish the sense of fear some may have when they are pulled over. The community being able to express themselves, voice their opinions without being retaliated against is a big step in facing this challenge. Communication can easily help to restore or build that trust back between the community and the officers. There are multiple approaches to take but a starting point can definitely be communication.

Publishing Information: American Journal of Public Health; Washington
Source Summary: This article discusses a form of communication in policing is through programs. I feel this is an indirect approach of contact with the police. The community is able to express their issues and concerns through these programs while healing. This article provides solutions that help to reduce police brutality and programs that can enhance communication with the officers and the community. Use of these programs allow less contact with officers. The community and officers can then work on building a more comfortable environment to work on building that trust back.

Source Summary: In this article they discuss the Swedish Policing through social media. This helps to further my research on the impact of communication in policing. I am able to take a look into a different countries environment and the way they police their communities. This also brings me to another subtopic of community policing through social media. I do feel this less effective than the programs, but at the same time they are helpful in the fact of the community being able to protest and express themselves online. Furthermore, advancing the aspect of the community having less contact with the officers, and ensuring their safety. rather than mediating the situation. In every instance you think police are there to deescalate your situation, when some have other agendas and heighten everyone’s senses more instead of
lowering them. When reading this article they highlight the indirect and direct forms of communication in policing. This article helps to support my topic in multiple ways, like showing how to master communication between officers and the community in different forms.

Source Summary: This article elaborates on the officers (employees) feeling as though they are being treated fairly within the workplace. Breaking down that if the employees aren’t treated fairly this is possibly a reason we are experiencing police violence in todays society. Furthermore, this article gives a variety of ways organizations can help better community policing. Different Organizations play a big role in better training officers on serving the public. It starts from the source and when the source creates a positive work environment that will show through policing the community should not be affected. Source Evaluation | 3
