Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Number of sigma and pi bonds represented in the structure has to be determined.
Concept Introduction:
The bond formed by the electron sharing between the atoms is called covalent bonding. It is also referred to as molecular bonds. These bonds can either be sigma or pi bonds. The bond that is formed by the head-on or axial overlap of the atomic orbitals is a sigma bond. Since the direct overlap of orbitals is possible in sigma bonds, it is the strongest type of covalent bond. A single bond consists of one sigma bond. The pi bond is formed by the sideways overlapping of the atomic orbitals. Multiple bonds contain both sigma and pi bonds. A double bond is made up of one sigma and one pi bond whereas triple bond consists of 1 sigma bond as well as two pi bonds.
