Concept Introduction:

The molecules that have same molecular formula or same number of atoms but spatial arrangement of atoms is different are called isomers. The phenomenon responsible for this is known as isomerism. Two major types of isomers are structural isomers and stereoisomers. Structural isomers exist when point of linkage of atoms and functional groups is different. Stereoisomers are formed if molecules have different orientations of atoms in space but molecular formula remains same.
